IWPR Programmes: Introduction

IWPR undertakes practical journalist training projects. In collaboration with local media, IWPR seeks to improve communication of vital information on human rights and democratisation, and assist regional media to gain international exposure. Pioneering the principle of local partnerships, IWPR programme activities operate in association with local media and media-oriented NGOs. Its project toolbox includes:

Reporting

Collaborative reporting and editing projects to support the production of quality journalism published locally and internationally;

Training

Journalist training and exchange programmes to build skills and share professional experience;

Confidence Building & National Dialogue

Round-table discussions and conferences on pertinent social and political issues, bringing together stakeholders from the media, civil society and the authorities;

Monitoring

Analysis of the regional media to assess and report on professional performance and political influence;

Development

Project assessment and other assistance for regional media and international agencies.

The complementary nature of these activities offers diverse opportunities for regional collaboration and an efficient use of resources for a comprehensive media development strategy.

The agency is based in Kampala and supported by a network of six regional correspondents and many more freelance contributors. Published material is provided in both text and audio formats and is available on a subscription basis.

Caucasus

Regional Dialogue & Governance Reporting
Caucasus Home
This programme works with print journalists in the North and South Caucasus to raise professional standards, heighten awareness of human rights, corruption and governance, and improve communication within a region divided by conflict and misunderstanding.
IWPR's Caucasus media development project is supported by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Open Society Institute and European Union.

Cross Caucasus Journalism Network
CrossCaucasus.net
The aim of this programme is to build journalistic connections across the Caucasus, share information and form collaborations across the borders and divides of the Caucasus.

Georgia Regional Media Network - www.regionalreporters.net
The Georgia Regional Media Network project seeks to create a network of regional journalists and improve their professional skills. The twice-monthly Accent programme is produced and broadcast by five popular radio stations in Georgia. Also, a website, www.regionalreporters.net, has been created, featuring radio broadcasts and articles by members of the network. The project is funded by the US Department of State.

Central Asia

Regional Training & Human Rights Reporting
Central Asia Home
This programme contributes to regional dialogue, human rights awareness and independent journalism through practical training and local publication, workshops and public roundtables, joint research projects and collaboration with local human rights groups.
The Central Asia media development project is supported by the Community Fund, Foreign & Commonwealth Office and the US State Department.

News Briefing Central Asia
NBCentralAsia.net
News Briefing Central Asia represents a new concept in regional reporting. Dedicated to providing analysis of current events, it gives subscribers the “news behind the news” - the context and meaning that often is hidden in the headlines. NBCentralAsia reports on the latest developments in politics, economics and social trends. Through its analysis and commentary, the service allows readers to understand events in a broader social and political context.

Central Asia Radio
IWPR’s weekly radio programmes for Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan provide 15 minutes of analysis and comment on current political and social themes in each country. The programmes go out in Russian and in Tajik or Kyrgyz, and to ensure that all listeners can hear them, they are being carried by established broadcast networks with maximum reach in each country.

Central Asia Human Rights Reporting Project
IWPR’s Central Asia Human Rights Reporting Project directly supports human rights defenders in all five Central Asian states by helping them develop efficient media and public outreach strategies to improve awareness and support and ensure human rights norms are respected and observed upon a daily basis across the region. The project delivers sustainable partnerships between media outlets and practitioners and the community of human rights’ defenders. This project is funded by the European Commission.

International Justice

International Justice/ICC Programme
International Justice/ICC Home
This programme provides in-depth investigations and analysis on international justice issues for republication across Uganda, the Democratic Republic of Congo and Sudan; generates debate about peace and reconciliation; and supports journalists through in-country trainings and internships in The Hague.

Facing Justice - ICC: IWPR Congo Radio Show
The Facing Justice radio programme is aimed at increasing public awareness in the Democratic Republic of Congo of war crimes trials taking place at the International Criminal Court, ICC, in The Hague. The programme draws on contributions from IWPR-trained journalists in DRC, staff at IWPR Netherlands, legal experts, civil society activists, political analysts, human rights campaigners and government representatives.

International Justice/ICTY Programme
International Justice/ICTY Home
This long-standing programme provides uniquely informed reporting on the war crimes tribunal in The Hague, to support local understanding of the process and to strengthen support for war crimes proceedings within the former Yugoslavia.
The project is supported by the Swedish International Development and Cooperation Agency (SIDA).

Iran

Mianeh Project
Iran Home
Mianeh is an independent initiative providing a platform for dialogue in Iran. Mianeh – or Middle – aims to be an open space for ideas, news and debate where writers in Iran can reach out to each other as well as to those outside the country who are interested in learning more about the vibrant and dynamic society that is Iran today. The idea behind Mianeh is that a real understanding and appreciation of another society can only be achieved through engaging with and learning from the society itself.

Iraq

Humanitarian Reporting And Training Programme
Iraq Home
Amid a crisis of momentous import, and endless media debate, Iraqi voices have been conspicuous largely by their absence - especially in the Western media. IWPR’s Iraqi Crisis Report will provide a platform for these voices, and others, to debate, inform and analyse key issues of war, peace and beyond in Iraq.
IWPR’s central aim is to strengthen Iraqi debate, which will include additional development and training activities in line with IWPR’s educational activities in other areas.

Pakistan

Open Minds Pakistan
Pakistan Home
Open Minds Pakistan is IWPR’s first youth-focused project. It provides journalism training to young people aged 10-19 in Pakistani schools and madrassas, and gives them opportunities to discuss, debate and publish reports on current affairs. The project began in early 2009 and currently works in 42 schools in a variety of areas of Pakistan, including the Swat valley and the country’s largest city, Karachi. During training, participants publish their work in national and international media, and compare views online with other trainees from around Pakistan.

Syria

Strengthening Independent Voices
Syria Home
The aim of this project is to support democracy and reform in Syria by strengthening independent media, civil society and human rights groups; and assist women, minority and youth participation in public life. The project will build local capacity, support the production and dissemination of independent reports and perspectives via innovative distance-learning and apprentice-style mentoring – working with sensitivity in an extremely delicate political environment – and provides immediate impact through information and outreach.

Books

IWPR special reports provide in-depth analysis of conflict, media and human rights issues in the regions we cover. Cross-community reporting projects link journalists across national or state lines. Media monitoring reports analyse and offer detailed assessment of local media coverage. Occasional reports posted by associated organisations provide analysis and investigation of political and human rights issues.

Trial Reports Archive, Coalition for International Justice (CIJ)

When CIJ closed in 2006, it donated its searchable Trial Reports Archive to IWPR in recognition of our own reporting work and to ensure these courtroom reports would remain available to the public electronically.

Training Resources

IWPR works with journalists to develop their professional capacities as part of our overall effort to strengthen local media. Whether a young reporter starting out or an experienced professional, all journalists benefit from continuing skills development, particularly in sharing experiences from different media traditions.

Media Consultancy In Transitional Countries

IWPR serves as an independent consultant to the UK's Department for International Department (DFID) to assess media programmes in post-communist transitional countries. The work focuses on Russia, the Ukraine, as well as the Balkans, and other regions in Central and Eastern Europe, the Caucasus and Central Asia. The work involves collaborating with DFID and regional media representatives to evaluate on-going journalism projects funded by the UK government.
